about the VI Peel

how does the treatment work?

The VI Peel works by gently removing dead and damaged skin cells in order to reveal the bright, healthy skin underneath. Each VI Peel is customized to the skin type and tone of each patient, as well as to specifically address each patient’s unique goals; however, it is critical that every patient follow the detailed pre- and post-treatment instructions provided.

The VI Peel can be applied in the comfort of our office and usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes to apply. During the initial application, some patients may experience a slight stinging or tingling sensation, which should subside quickly. After the application, patients may return home but the peel must remain on the skin for at least four hours. After this four-hour wait, the patient should wash off the peel and apply any aftercare products provided.

how long does the treatment take?

The length of the treatment can depend on the individual’s needs. Typically, you will only need 30-60 minutes to complete the application process.

is it painful?

Generally, the VI peel process is not painful.  To manage any discomfort after treatment, we will send you home with a topical cream to be applied to the treatment area in the days after your peel.

what is recovery like after the treatment? How much downtime do I need?

Typical downtime occurs on days 3, 4 and 5 which are the typical days of peeling. By day 6-7 most exfoliation has subsided.   Typically, peeling begins on the third day, starting around the mouth then peeling outward. The forehead and neck will be the last areas to peel.

when will I start to see results?

Your skin will continue to improve over the weeks and months following your treatment.  Although you will begin to see the improvement after the 7 day peeling period, remember it takes 30 days to complete the collagen-building process.  You may require a series of treatments for maximum results.

what is in the VI Peel?

The VI Peel is a proprietary blend of the following ingredients: TCA or trichloroacetic acid 12%, tretinoic acid 0.1%, salicyclic acid 12%, phenol 12%, vitamin C, and a mineral blend. Phenol is an ingredient particularly effective for hyperpigmentation.

can I combine my peel with other treatments?

For wow results, VI Peels are often alternated with radio frequency microneedling.  Microneedling breaks pigment and the VI Peel lifts it.  It is recommended patients wait at least 14 days after the peel before undergoing a microneedling treatment.

what is the best time to schedule the treatment?

If you work Monday – Friday, and don’t have social plans for the weekend, we recommend getting the procedure on Thursday or early in the day on Friday. The flaking usually takes about a week to complete, however, there are certain days we have found that people experience the most peeling:

·       When done on Thursday (day 1), we’ve found that patients tend to look good, or even better, on Thursday and Friday (day 2),

·       on Saturday (day 3) and Sunday (day 4) there is significant shedding.

·       By Monday ( day 5) most people are able to return to work with only minor peeling on Tuesday (day 6) and Wednesday (day 7).

·       It is best to avoid the procedure when you plan to be in strong sun.

If you have social plans for the weekend and prefer your downtime during the week, we recommend getting the procedure on Saturday or Monday.

·       When done on Saturday or Monday (day 1), we’ve found that patients tend to look good, or even better, on Sunday or Tuesday (day 2),

·       on Tuesday or Wednesday (day 3) and Wednesday or Thursday (day 4) there is significant shedding.

·       By Thursday or Friday (day 5) most people are able to return regular activities with only minor peeling on Friday or Saturday (day 6) and Saturday or Sunday (day 7).

how to care for your skin after treatment

general

·       The first two days your skin will look a little tan, bronzed, or pink. It may also feel a bit tight before the peeling begins.

·       As a general rule, treat it like a sunburn: avoid sun exposure, avoid sweating and avoid heat.

·       During the peeling phase you must avoid sun exposure. Even after the peeling has subsided your new skin will be sensitive to UV light. Protect your investment and reapply your sunscreen when outdoors.

·       If any products in the post-peel kit sting or irritate beyond your tolerance reach out to your practitioner for options to use instead.

·       The amount of visible peeling you will experience varies greatly. You will peel as much as your skin needs to peel.

·       Each morning apply the VI Derm Post-Treatment Repair Cream and VI Derm SPF 50 Daily UV Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen and apply as needed throughout the day. Continue use for the 7-Day peeling process.

·       Pigment may darken as the skin prepares to peel. This is normal.

towelettes

·       Function: The towelettes included in your post-peel kit provide additional stimulation of the skin and expedite the peeling process.

·       Use: First towelette should be used 4 hours after your peel has been applied. Subsequent towelettes will be applied at intervals designated in your aftercare booklet. All towelettes should be spaced a minimum of 4 hours apart and all towelettes should be used in the first 48 hours.

·       Discontinue: Once peeling begins, discontinue towelette use.

·       Side effects: Towelettes are not refreshing towelettes. There are active ingredients in these towelettes and therefore you may note some light stinging upon application. Some people can also experience some itching, especially on night 1 which can be remedied by applying VI Derm Post-Treatment Repair Cream, hydrocortisone cream, or taking oral antihistamine.

peeling

·       Safe products to use during peeling: VI Derm Gentle Purifying Cleanser, VI Derm Post-Treatment Repair Cream and VI Derm SPF 50 Daily UV Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen. (From your home you can also use a gentle cleanser, Aquaphor, and sunscreen.)

·       Days 3, 4 and 5 are the typical days of peeling. By day 6 most exfoliation has subsided.

·       Typically, peeling begins on the third day, starting around the mouth and then peeling outward. The forehead and neck will be the last areas to peel.

·       We recommend cleansing your face prior to showering and keeping your face protected from hot water.

·       When cleansing your face use your fingertips only. Avoid using washcloths or facial machine brushes during the first week.

·       While the skin is exfoliating avoid pulling, picking, rubbing, and any premature removal of skin. This could lead to significant irritation and possible hyperpigmentation. Never force or peel the skin off in sheets.

·       When peeling make sure to keep your body hydrated and your skin The VI Derm Post-Treatment Repair Cream may cause slight sensitivity when first applied but it quickly subsides.

·       If you are excessively dry or irritated when peeling, add a light layer of Aquaphor to provide a protective barrier.

glow & protect

·       Resuming Skin Care Products

·       Gentle Skin Care: Can be resumed once peeling has subsided, usually day 6-7.

·       Skin Care with active ingredients (such as retinol, Vitamin C, salicylic acid, etc.): Can be resumed once peeling has subsided and sensitivity has returned to normal, usually day 7-10.

·       Physical Activity / Exercise

·       Refrain for 72-96 hours after peel application. Inducing excessive perspiration can lead to PIH or blistering.

·       Scheduling the Next VI Peel

·       VI Peels should be scheduled every 4-6 weeks (for best results)

·       Additional Skincare Treatments

·       It is recommended to wait for a minimum of 2 weeks before any treatment that creates exfoliation of the skin. (Includes facials, extractions, waxing, and threading)

·       You can shave once the peeling has completely subsided. Usually, this is 6-7 days.
